Esta semana os enseño un ave que solo se ve en estado salvaje en España en contadas ocasiones que es el flamenco enano (Phoeniconaias minor).
This week I show you a bird that is only seen in the wild in Spain rarely which is the Lesser Flamingo.
Con motivo de dos visitas a La Mancha Húmeda en días consecutivos, el 26 y 27 de marzo, pudimos observar a esta rara especie. En ambos días el tiempo no fue muy bueno y sobre todo el primer día tuvimos mucho viento y lo pudimos observar muy cerca de los observatorios de la Laguna de la Veguilla en Alcázar de San Juan. El segundo día además de las especies vistas el día anterior añadiremos como más destacables un morito común (Plegadis
falcinellus) y una pareja de pájaros moscones (Remiz
pendulinus).
As a result of two visits to La Mancha Húmeda on consecutive days, March 26th and 27th, we could observe this rare specie. On both days the weather was not very good and especially the first day we had a lot of wind and we could observe it very close from the observatories of the Laguna de la Veguilla at Alcázar de San Juan. The second day in addition to the species seen the day before, as most remarkable, we added a Glossy Ibis and a pair of Penduline Tit.
El primer día el cliente tenia todo el día para pajarear hicimos un recorrido más extenso de los humedales. Nuestro primer destino fue la laguna Larga de Villacañas.
The first day the client had all day to birding and we did a longer tour of the wetlands. Our first destination was the laguna Larga of Villacañas.
La verdad es que nos llevamos una decepción al ver que en la laguna no había ningún ave. He visitado esta laguna muchas veces y es la primera vez que no veo nada. En unas charcones detrás del observatorio de Los Flamencos había unos cuantos tarros blancos (Tadorna
tadorna). En la foto un macho adulto.
The truth is that we were disappointed to see that in the lagoon there was no bird. I have visited this Lagoon many times and is the first time that I see nothing. In a pond behind Los Flamingos observatory there were a few Common Shelducks. The photo shows an adult male.
También había algunos combatientes (Philomachus
pugnax) y unas cigüeñuelas comunes (Himantopus
himantopus).
There was also some Ruffs and Black-winged Stilts.
Cuando llegamos a la Laguna Grande de Villafranca de los Caballeros el viento empezaba a soplar. En la foto un pareja de patos colorados (Netta
rufina).
When we reached the Laguna Grande de Villafranca de los Caballeros wind began to blow. In the photo a couple of Red-crested
Pochard.
Este macho estaba buceando cerca nuestro.
This male was diving close to us.
Al igual que este zampullín común (Tachybaptus
ruficollis).
Like this Little Grebe.
Como en otras ocasiones pude comprobar que algunas de las fochas comunes (Fulica
atra) tenían el plumaje muy desgastado quizá se deba a que hay muchas en esta laguna y las peleas son frecuentes.
As in other occasions I could see that some of the Common Cootshad had very worn plumage and may be because there are many in this lagoon and fights are frequent.
En ambos días vimos bastantes trigueros (Miliaria
calandra). Este estaba en esta postura debido al fuerte viento reinante.
On both days we saw many Corn
Buntings. This was in this position due to the strong wind.
También pudimos disfrutar de varios grupos de gangas ibéricas (Pterocles
alchata). Hay que ver que difíciles son de ver en los campos. Este primer grupo estaba compuesto por 12 ejemplares aunque separados en dos grupos.
We also enjoyed several groups of Pin-tailed
Sandgrouses. Tthey are really difficult to see in the fields. This first group was composed of 12 individuals though separated into two groups.
Son unas aves preciosas y me gustan muchísimo como podéis observar.
They are beautiful birds and I like them very much as you may notice.
Ya en la Laguna de Camino a Villafranca perteneciente al Complejo Lagunar de Alcázar de San Juan se ha instalado la colonia de cría de las gaviotas reidoras (Larus
melanocephalus).
Already in the Laguna de Camino a Villafranca belonging to Complejo Lagunar de Alcázar de San Juan is installed the breeding colony of Black-headed Gulls.
Y aun se podían contemplar bastantes ejemplares de gaviotas sombrías (Larus
fuscus) que en su mayoría se trataba de ejemplares jóvenes.
And still could look enough specimens of Lesser Black-backed Gulls that were mostly juveniles.
Había varias garzas reales (Ardea
cinerea).
There were several Gray Herons.
Y esta abubilla europea (Upupa
epops) estaba buscando alimento cerca de uno de los observatorios.
And this Eurasian Hoopoe was searching for food close to one of the observatories.
Un macho de cerceta común (Anas
crecca).
A male of Common Teal.
Había muchos flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus
ruber).
There were many Greater Flamingos.
Y donde se podían ver más limícolas era en el comienzo de la Laguna. En la fotos unos combatientes (Philomachus
pugnax). Había adultos y jóvenes e incluso algunos machos estaban empezando a mudar a su plumaje de cortejo.
And where you could see more Limicolae was at the beginning of the Lagoon. In the photos some Ruffs. There were young, adults and even some males were molting to his breeding plumage.

Cuando llegamos a la Laguna de El Campillo el viento era muy fuerte y los flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber) estaban más cerca de los observatorios de lo habitual.
When we reached the Laguna El Campillo wind was very strong and Greater Flamingos were closer than usual to the observatories.
Por culpa del viento hacía bastante frío. Fijaos en las olas que había en la Laguna.
Because of the wind it was quite cold. Look at the waves that were in the lagoon.
Mientras me estaba entreteniendo con los prismáticos uno de los clientes dijo: hay un flamenco mucho más rosa que los demás. Miré a la laguna y vi este precioso flamenco enano (Phoeniconaias minor). Todo un golpe de suerte el poder contemplar esta especie que es muy rara en España y más en La Mancha. Es la segunda vez que veo esta especie en Alcázar.
While I was entertained with my binoculars one of the customers said: there is a pinker Flamingo than the others. I looked at the lagoon and saw this beautiful Lesser Flamingo. Quite a stroke of luck to be able to contemplate this specie which is very rare in Spain and more at La Mancha. It is the second time I see this specie at Alcázar de San Juan.
Pudimos ver que no estaba anillado.
We could see that it was not ringed.
También había muchos zampullines cuellinegros (Podiceps
nigricollis).
There were also many Black-necked
Grebes.
Que elegantes y bonitos son los flamencos comunes (Phoenicopterus ruber).
Greater flamingos are elegant and beautiful, aren´t they?
Un bonito macho de cigüeñuela común (Himantopus himantopus).

Y como podéis apreciar que la Laguna perecía un mar debido al viento decidimos ir a ver si encontrábamos algunas esteparias. En la foto un macho de malvasía cabeciblanca (Oxyura leucocephala) entre el oleaje.
And as you can see that the Lagoon seems to be a Sea because of the wind we decided to try if we could find some Steppe Birds. In the photo a male of White-headed Duck within waves.
Bingo, encontramos un precioso bando de gangas ibéricas (Pterocles alchata). Había 32, 15 machos y 17 hembras.
Bingo, we found a lovely flock of Pin-tailed Sandgrouses. There were 32, 15 males and 17 females.
Al día siguiente con mejor tiempo hice un alto en el camino para ver algunas esteparias. Vimos bastantes avutardas comunes (Otis
tarda) incluso haciendo la rueda en sus típicos lugares de exhibición compuesto por varios machos juntos. En la foto dos calándrias (Melanocorypha
calandra).
The next day with better weather, I stopped on the way to see some Steppe Birds. We saw several Great Bustards and some males were displaying together in their typical places. In the photo two Calandra Larks.
Con bastante mejor tiempo fuimos a la Laguna Grande de Villafranca de los Caballeros y lo más destacable fueron los patos colorados (Netta
rufina).
With much better weather we went to Laguna Grande at Villafranca de los Caballeros and the highlight were Red-crested Pochard.
Este macho destacaba de los demás por su colorido mucho más claro.
This male stood out from the others by its color much lighter.
También nos entretuvieron un buen rato esta pareja de somormujos lavancos (Podiceps
cristatus).
We were also entertained a while by this pair of Great Crested Grebes.
Y de camino al Complejo Lagunar de Alcázar de San juan vimos este bando de gangas ibéricas (Pterocles
alchata). En total había 22.
And in the way to Complejo Lagunar of Alcazar de San Juan we saw this flock of Pin-tailed Sandgrouse. In total there were 22.
Y ya en la Laguna de Camino a Villafranca alcanzamos a ver a esta pagaza piconegra (Gelochelidon
nilotica). La primera que veía este año.
And already in the Laguna de Camino a Villafranca we saw this Gull-billed Tern. The first I saw this year.
Este macho de perdiz roja (Alectoris
rufa) andaba por los alrededores de la laguna.
This male of Red-legged Partridge was walking close to the lagoon.
También había algunas avocetas comunes (Recurvirostra
avosetta).
There was also some Avocets.
Y el flamenco enano (Phoeniconaias minor) se había cambiado de laguna pero lo pudimos volver a ver.
And the Lesser Flamingo had changed of Lagoon but we could see it again.

And when we reached the Laguna El Campillo this Glossy Ibis overflew us.

And we saw this pair of Penduline
